Nurse Locum Register

We often receive enquiries from Practice Managers looking for locum practice nurses. This area of the website is to be dedicated to providing Practice Managers with information about nurses seeking locum work.

The list is anonymised and contact details can be obtained from Elaine Chapman by email,

This free service is offered to GP practices in Essex.  Contact numbers for nurses will only be given to Practice Managers who supply their address together with their name, practice address and contact details.

The Nurse Locum Register is a voluntary register of all Practice Nurses, currently employed or retired, who have capacity to work additional hours.

Many Practice Nurses have areas of specialist expertise such as asthma, diabetes, cervical cytology. Currently these skills are only available to the practices in which they work but nurses with specialist expertise can offer these skills to other practices on an “as and when needed” basis. Similarly, retired Practice Nurses have extensive skills and experience which are no longer available to patients when they retire. Some retiring nurses may like to continue to work on a less formal basis utilising their experience and skills built up over many years, but at hours, and in areas, that they choose.

  •          The Register will provide an up to date list of practice nurses available to work additional hours
  •          Retired nurses will be retained
  •          Under employed nurses will have the opportunity to use their skills more widely and to improve their income
  •         The Register will utilize the skills of the current and retiring workforce
The Practice Manager will negotiate directly with the nurse regarding the practice requirements and it is the nurse’s responsibility to negotiate salary and terms of employment. The practice will be responsible for a temporary contract, induction and support of the locum nurse and for payment to the nurse for work undertaken. The practice will also need to check that the nurse has up to date registration with the NMC.

Nurses should have an up to date C.V. available to send to a temporary employer and should also have references available.

In order to support general practice, retired nurses who join the Nurse Locum Register can attend any EQUIP organised course at the 'member rate'.

N.B. Practices seeking to employ locum staff are responsible for confirming the authenticity of their qualifications and for taking up appropriate references including DBS checks and NMC registration for nurses.

Practice Nurses  should not undertake any tasks for which they have not been adequately and appropriately trained.
