Who is this course for?

It is important to note that this training is for reception staff that have successfully completed the EQUIP CPD Accredited 2 Day Care Navigation training course ONLY.

About the course

Non Clinical staff cannot triage, they are not medically trained, but they can assist in ensuring the patient is seen in an appropriate timeframe.

Receptionists are often the patient’s first contact and are the gatekeepers to the clinicians. Changes in the way our receptionists are having to work requires them to be skilled and have confident in sensitively ascertaining the nature of the patient’s need and exploring with them safe and appropriate options. This includes recognising red flag symptoms which require urgent medical attention. They play an important role in assigning patients to the most appropriate level of care at the right time. This course is for reception and administration staff who have experience with care navigation/reception.

What are Red flags

  • Red Flag Symptoms – Remember minor and major illness can have the same presenting features.
  • Chronic Disease
  • Minor injury
  • Minor illness
  • Warning signs and symptoms

This training course is accredited by the CPD Certification Service.  – Facilitated by Jill Warn

A 2 day workshop to deliver Care Navigation training to non-clinical staff working in GP practices. The training programme is based on the essential level competency domains in the Health Education England ‘Care Navigation: a competency framework’ document.

The aim is to provide non-clinical staff with the knowledge, confidence and skills they need to safely facilitate patient flow through the complicated health and social care system. As well as improving the outcomes for patients and their carers, it is expected that this will then release clinician time and resources.  The course covers relevant theory and practice with taught sessions, discussion and group work. It will also cover risk management and when signposting away from a  clinician is not appropriate.

Learning outcomes

The student will:

  1. Understand the principles of care navigation and the benefits for staff and patients.
  2. Develop knowledge of local services and information sources
  3. Know when signposting patients is appropriate and when not to signpost patients away from a clinician
