Time 9.30am to 12.30pm
This half day course is designed to provide HCAs with the theoretical knowledge they need to undertake INR testing so that this can be done safely and effectively in primary care. The course will cover the role of the HCA, the clotting pathway and reasons for anticoagulation, the role of warfarin and the risks associated with warfarin therapy, obtaining a capillary sample, monitoring warfarin levels with INR testing and why good management is important.
Following the course the HCA will need a period of supervised practice with a nurse mentor and to complete a formal competency assessment. A competency assessment package will be provided.
This course will not cover dose adjustment of warfarin as this is considered to be outside the remit of the HCA role.
