Aims

This two-day Introduction to Travel Health course is intended for nurses/health professionals who may be new to the field of Travel Health, or for those already practicing who may not have undertaken formal training in the subject and who wish to update and expand on their current knowledge. It aims to provide training on many topics, including risk assessment, travel vaccines, non-vaccine preventable illnesses, malaria, professional issues and the latest developments in travel health. The course length is as per the recommendation (for those new to providing a travel consultation) by RCN 2018 Competencies: Travel health nursing: career and competence development| Royal College of Nursing page 23 point 10

Objectives

Having completed the course for delegates to:

  • Understand the importance and process of risk assessment of the traveller and trip and how to apply this in practice.
  • Have a good general knowledge of travel vaccines, the diseases they prevent and to be able to deliver appropriate preventative advice to the traveller.
  • Be aware of non-vaccine preventable diseases and topical issues in travel health and to be able to provide evidence-based advice to travellers.
  • Understand how to access the most up to date resources for use in the travel consultation and to identify when it is appropriate to use them.
  • To be able to plan vaccination schedules for itineraries.
  • Have increased knowledge of Global malaria and malaria in travellers returning to the UK.
  • Be able to identify which travellers are at higher risk of getting malaria and which are more likely to die from malaria, tailoring their advice to travellers accordingly.
  • Understand the principles of bite avoidance, malaria chemoprophylaxis and the importance of prompt malaria diagnosis.
  • To be able to deliver evidence-based advice to travellers about malaria prevention.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of professional issues in the Travel consultation.
  • It will include structured learning and will be interactive, with learning taking place using case studies, practical activities and group discussion.

 

Directions

Travelling to Essex Equip By Car:

There is NO parking at the venue, but the public pay and display car park can be found on Newland Drive (CM8 2AP) about 300 yards away.  £6 for the whole day or for further tariff, please see Braintree Council Website

From the car park walk back to Collingwood Rd and then back up to the traffic lights. At the traffic lights turn left onto Newland St. (The George PH is on the corner) carry on walking until you reach the zebra crossing (outside the Public Library), cross the road and head towards the Dorothy L Sayers Statue and the Job Centre. Our entrance just at the rear of the Job Centre.

By Train

It is a 7 min walk from Witham Railway Station, head towards the town, turn left at THE AVENUE, continue walking down The Avenue to the junction with Newland Street, then turn right, carry on walking until you reach the zebra crossing (outside the Public Library), cross the road and head towards the Job Centre. Our entrance is just at the rear of the Job Centre.
