Event Details

A course for healthcare assistants who are new to working in general practice.

The course is accredited by the CPD Certification Service and aligned with the Care Certificate Standards for HCAs. It consists of 5 study days covering the role of the HCA in general practice, relevant clinical skills (BP, pulse, ECG, peak flow, capillary blood sampling, urinalysis, body mass index, waist measurement) as well as an overview of long term conditions (hypertension, coronary heart disease, respiratory disease and diabetes). Students also require a period of supervised practice with a nurse mentor until competency in the clinical skills is achieved.

Students are required to complete written work and a competency assessment package that demonstrates that they have met the learning outcomes. The written assignments must be typed and emailed to the course tutor so appropriate competency in IT is needed to undertake this course.

Students need to have had the Hepatitis B vaccination before the start of the course and will need to work at least 10-12 hours a week as an HCA to complete the practical competencies.

All 5 study days must be attended to complete the course
